Walking Group Leadership

Walking Group Leader Award

This is the most accessible hillwalking leadership award currently available. It is the basic award for leaders of hillwalking groups in non-mountainous and non-rugged areas of Ireland and the UK. The award was launched in the UK in 2001. It came about in response to a demand from youth leaders, walking clubs and outdoor centres. The WGL scheme was designed to complement the long standing Mountain Leader Award (ML) which trains people to lead walking parties in all mountainous areas of Ireland and the UK.

The WGL scheme is designed for leading day walks within defined terrain. Suitable terrain for the use of the WGL Award meets the following criteria:

• Open, uncultivated, non-mountainous high or remote country known as upland, moor, bog or hill
• Areas enclosed by well-defined boundaries such as roads, water etc. (areas that merge with mountainous regions and do not have well defined boundaries are excluded)
• Areas of remoteness that are easily exited in a few hours to an accessible track or road
• Areas where movement on steep or rocky terrain is not required in either a planned or unplanned situation

Bren Whelan has been delivering WGL Training and Assessment course since the scheme first came to Ireland in 2002. Whilst working as Director of Mountaineering at Tiglin and as a member of staff at Tollymore, Bren has delivered more WGL courses than any other instructor in Ireland.
