The Single Pitch Award is the nationally recognised award for taking people climbing outdoors on accessible, non-tidal single pitch cliffs and indoors on climbing walls. The award consists of two days of training and a further two days of assessment. Prospective candidates must first register for the scheme via the MCI office PH: 01 625 1115.

Single Pitch Award courses are directed by Bren Whelan, the former director of Mountaineering at Tiglin, The National Mountain Centre. He is a FULL Mountain Instructor Certificate holder and as the main SPA trainer and assessor at Tiglin over the last few years. He will be able to provide you with all the skills that you'll need to become a safe SPA!

Single Pitch Award Training (2 days)

This a comprehensive two day course and the syllabus includes: personal climbing skills, equipment use, knot tying, rope management, belay construction, group abseiling, bottom roping, bouldering, indoor climbing wall use.

Single Pitch Award Assessment (2 days)
Candidates will be assessed on all aspects of the SPA syllabus and must complete a written paper and an indoor climbing wall session.
