The Mountain Navigation Training - A map & compass course for walkers!

This is the most accessible and comprehensive navigational training course currently available in Ireland. It is designed for walkers of every level and for people who aspire to travel in hill, mountain and other environments where navigational skills, such as map reading and compass skills are not just required, but are essential when the weather turns bad.

The mountain skills & navigation training programme provides a structured approach to developing the skills required to travel safely in the mountains. It is designed for all types of walkers, and prior experince is not essential, but a real interest in learning about navigation and hillwalking are!

This two day course will provide you with a solid foundation in all the essential skills required for navigating in the hills and mountains of Ireland and the UK.

We see the use of the map and the compass as being essential skills for travelling in the mountains, and they will be taught over this training weekend so you can leave with all the skills required to tackle the mountains.

Mountain Skills & Navigation Training (2 days)

This mountain skills & navigation training course will help you build a solid foundation in the basic skills of hill walking. You will learn the following skills: basic navigation techniques feature to map recognition, timing and pacing skills, compass use, and recognition of mountain hazards. You will complete two separate day hikes over the weekend and participate in a number of discussions on hill walking equipment and skills. Truly a great weekend!

You will learn the most current and most upto date navigation skills to help you stay safe, on a course directed by a full Mountain Instructors' Certificate (MIC) holder, this is the highest instructional quailification available and it supercedes the - Mountain Leader Award Summer / Winter, the International Mountain Leader, Single Pitch Award, the Multi-Pitch Award and the Mountain Instructors' Award.

Mountain Skills 2 Training (MI/BOS)

During this two day MI/BOS mountain skills course you will learn navigational techniques, complete two hikes, as well as an after dark night navigation training session. Skills covered will include: route planning, compass use and bearings, skills for negotiating different types of terrain and steeper ground, environmental impact, emergency procedures. This is a great weekend and one which will equip hillwalkers with the skills to explore the mountains in confidence.

Mountain Skills Assessment – (MI/BOS)

People participate in the mountain skills assessment for several reasons, some of these are for personal achievement, confidence, a requirement, or as a pre requisite for registration with the Mountain Leadership training scheme. This is a two-day mostly practical navigation assessment with a short written paper. *This is an Irish Mountain Training Board and Mountaineering Council of Ireland approved course.
